For school and district IT
Vocius on school Chromebooks
A website with short speaking and argument games, free for schools. There's no extension to install. You can pin the web app if you like.
1. Domains to allow
| Domain | Needed for |
|---|---|
| vocius.ai | Everything: the site and the games |
| api.vocius.ai | Class codes, sign-in features, recorded practice, Studio |
| accounts.google.com | Only teachers and students 13+ who sign in |
| *.ingest.sentry.io, *.ingest.us.sentry.io | Crash reports with personal data removed. Blocking them breaks nothing |
2. Put it on every Chromebook (optional)
It's a web app, so you can push it from the Google Admin console: roughly Devices → Chrome → Apps & extensions → Users & browsers → add by URL (https://vocius.ai/play), force-install, and pin to the shelf. Google moves these menus sometimes, so follow its current help article on installing web apps.
3. The microphone
Voice games and "say it out loud" turns ask for the mic. To skip the prompt, add https://vocius.ai to the Chrome policy AudioCaptureAllowedUrls.
In the games the mic is used on the device only: loudness and pitch are read, and the audio is thrown away. Nothing is recorded or sent. A red ON AIR lamp shows whenever the mic is open. Students can type instead.
In Chrome, if the speech pack for the student's language is already installed, a spoken answer is also turned into text on the device for feedback. That never uses a server, and the text is never stored or sent. We never download the pack.
4. What leaves the device
- Games, no class code: nothing a kid says or types. Like any website, pages send anonymous page-view counts (Vercel Analytics) and crash reports with personal data removed (Sentry).
- Games with a class code: a nickname the teacher asks for, and counts per finished game. Never typed words or audio.
- Arena on the projector: nothing, and nothing is saved on the teacher's computer.
- Recorded 60-second practice (13+, signed in): the audio goes to our transcription vendor and is deleted after analysis. We keep measurements, not the transcript.
Each point is tied to the code that enforces it in our privacy kit. Ask us for it.
5. Shared devices and network
Game progress is saved in the browser on that device. Students tap Clear this device on the Play page when they're done. The games need internet to open, then use almost no bandwidth. Printed cards need no device.
